Gina found a driftcard.

Gina D. found on driftcard on October 8, right after hurricane Nate and provided some nice pictures and a narrative of her discovery:

“Hello!  I found this drift card today inside The Gulf Islands National Seashore. It was sitting just like this about 50 feet from the road ( I stepped it off) and about 300 feet east of the Gulf Islands National Seashore sign. This is the area down towards Navarre not Fort Pickens.   That’s the back of the sign in the pic looking toward Pensacola Beach. Of course, Hurricane Nate came through yesterday and the water was rough and the winds were about 40 mph. It was amazing!!!  If you need anything else let me know. I taught Science for 12 yrs and love Marine Life!! ”

New Experiment Underway

Forty-six new drifters, of three different types, were recently deployed on 07/20 in two different locations along the Abaco/Rapid section at 27ºN in collaboration with NOAA/AOML. Stay tuned for upcoming updates.

Inspiring future scientists?

“Reed is going in second grade and is really into science and was super excited he could be apart of your experiment”. His card was found near Marathon, in the Florida Keys.

Gwen found an orange card. “Yesterday, Thursday, June 22nd at 3:26pm, my daughter located one of your drift cards!  As you can see, she was very excited and just got finished telling me how she wanted to be a scientist.  We found the drift card washed up along the shore just East of the Crab Trap in Destin, FL.  She feels like she is famous, good luck with the experiment!”

New experiment on the way

We are getting ready to deploy 30 new drifters on the MOCHA / RAPID section at 27ºN, along with our colleagues of NOAA AOML. We will deploy an equal number of thin (5cm) and thick drifters (10cm) for comparison with the classical SVP drifters. We will soon report the results on the site.

New Drift Card Found

After tropical storm Cindy went along the Gulf coast these past days, Katie, Bill and Lauren Russell just found a new orange drift card in Orange Beach, AL, on June 22, 2017.

Thank you very much for your help in our research.

Drifter Recovered!

One of our drifter was recovered March 10th, on Big Pine Key,  by the team of Kristie Killam and Kate Watts, rangers at the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Complex. Thank you very much to them!
